The Role

Who We Are

The Phoenix Legal Action Network (PLAN) works in solidarity with our local immigrant community to reimagine justice in Arizona.  We are a small and growing nonprofit organization led by two women of color both of whom are children of immigrants who grew up in the Phoenix metropolitan area. We are proud to stand and fight with black and brown immigrant families like our own, who are often othered and marginalized, to ensure we are all safe, welcome, and valued in Arizona.  Read about our team here.

Free Legal Services: PLAN has been providing free immigration legal services to keep families together and stop deportations since 2018.  In the future, we envision offering other types of legal assistance (e.g. housing, employment) to support our immigrant neighbors who are ineligible for these services through existing community legal organizations.

Shifting Narratives & Building Power: Unlike most legal services organizations, we do not believe giving everyone a lawyer will solve the problems of our broken justice system.  Rather, we recognize that for those historically excluded from systems of power, the need for a lawyer is a symptom of a deeper root cause of injustice and inequity.  We use our legal services to mitigate harm while we work to reimagine justice with our community.  This work includes using storytelling and art to pushback against anti-immigrant sentiment and partnering with local immigrant-led organizations to build community power and democratize legal information. Learn more about our work at www.planphx.org.

About this position

Purpose of Consultant

We seek to contract a grant writer and researcher to work with us to raise new private grant funds to allow us to hire a third full-time staff member, ideally an experienced attorney, in 2025.  A third staff member will not only allow PLAN to improve and expand our legal services but also give our Executive Director (currently also our only attorney) the time she needs to build relationships, fundraise, and develop organizational infrastructure to move us toward our larger vision for the future.  We estimate our total annual budget with the new position will be $425,000.  We seek a grant writer and researcher who can help us meet this fundraising goal by obtaining new and ideally multi-year and/or renewable private grant funds over the next year.

Scope of Work

The grant writer’s scope of work may include, but is not limited to:

  • Identifying new, aligned sources of funding for which PLAN is eligible, especially funding sources outside of Arizona to fund our three main areas of work: free legal services for non-detained undocumented immigrants, immigrant storytelling and art to change the narrative on immigration, and building power in solidarity with local immigrant-led organizations.
  • Introducing PLAN to aligned funders and supporting us in cultivating those relationships.
  • Developing a grants calendar and submitting customized grant proposals to potential funders in accordance with the grants calendar.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on grant materials prepared by our Executive Director.
  • Reviewing, improving, and creating grant proposal template materials including letters of inquiry, budget narratives, program narratives, program outcomes & impacts etc.
  • Identifying documentary and/or infrastructure gaps that prevent PLAN from accessing other funding sources and creating a checklist to help us fill these gaps moving forward.
  • Solicit and, when provided, incorporate funder feedback into grant proposal template materials.

Budget

$20,000-$30,000 over a period of 9-12 months with monthly evaluations of progress and the opportunity for either party to terminate or modify the contract.  If you do not believe this budget is adequate to achieve our goals, please let us know in your proposal and propose an appropriate budget and/or smaller scope of work.  Please keep in mind our small staff size and annual revenue when preparing your proposal.
